Review: 2013 Freightliner Columbia CL112 Prime Mover
2013 Freightliner CL112: The Introduction
The annual Australian “TruckWeek” is just a few months away and the anticipation from truckers and contractors is starting to rise as some of the world’s leading manufacturers are once again poised to introduce their new generation of trucks and heavy-duty vehicles in the market. But since that event is still a few months away, we’ll slow things down a bit here at Truck Advisor in order to feature another classic truck that’s just actually fairly young and still has a lot of potential to offer even in today’s industry landscape: the 2013 Freightliner Columbia CL112 Prime Mover.
2013 Freightliner CL112: Key Features
The new Columbia CL112 is powered by the latest generation Cummins ISLe5, the 8.9 litre engine that can deliver up to 400 horsepower and 1,254 lb-ft of torque, and can be teamed with either an Eaton manual or Allison automatic transmissions. This essentially allows the powerhouse truck to be rated 40,000kg Gross Combination Mass, which in its own is pretty impressive in its class. In addition, the extra power boost lets the truck adaptable to more applications; allowing a better operational flexibility overall.
The CL112 offers one of the most well-spaced cabin I’ve seen during the past few years. To add, the new configuration includes a Day Cab and the 34” Mid-Roof Sleeper, both of which are exquisitely designed to make the most of the space and provide the driver and his passenger with maximum comfort during each travel. Furthermore, the truck’s interior include: softer lighting that’s easier on the eye, plenty of under-bunk and overhead storage with locks, noise reduction technology to reduce stress, and fully adjustable EzyRider® II air suspended seat.
The latest generation of the CL112 also boasts of a high power to weight ratio and compression brake up to 250 bhp and the rear engine “Power Take Off,” providing the truck with great balance and maneuverability on the road. In addition, the CL112 can be fine-tuned to perfectly fit whatever task is at hand. The truck’s versatile build is worth noting, too as it’s available in 6×4, 8×4 and 10×4 configurations for construction work and 4×2 or 6×4 for distribution roles.
The Columbia CL112 comes with great options that contractors would truly appreciate as it allow them to set up the truck in such a way that it’ll be most efficient for their business operations. In fact, Columbia’s been generous enough to let us choose from four of the best engine in today’s market: the heavy-duty Detroit Diesel DD15 engine, fuel-efficient Detroit Diesel DD13 engine, Cummins ISX and signature engines EGR and E5 SCR, and the classic Cummins ISLE5 engine. To add, the Cl112’s slightly compact frame lets the vehicle adapt more conveniently to many applications and road conditions that bigger or smaller truck’s may not do so with the same ease.

2013 Freightliner CL112: The Verdict
The 2013 Freightliner Columbia CL112 Prime Mover gives contractors another go to option as a versatile and robust machine that’s primed for the Australian market. The truck’s improvement from its previous generation would not overwhelm you at first glance, but a better look at the specs and key components of the machine and you’ll be immediately convinced that you’ll be investing in a pretty good and stable machine now and in the long term. It’s also one of the best units I’ve seen in Brown and Hurley and other leading distributors, which gives a pretty good account of the truck’s impressive market value.
